20 Things I’ve Learned (Or Had Confirmed) About Humanity During The ‘Pandemic’ (THREAD):

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

12/ Most people value safety and security more than freedom and liberty, even if said ‘safety’ is merely an illusion.

Alright Zuby.   Now you hit a hot spot for me.   I have had notes for a blog post on this one simmering for a bit.   Time to crack the lid.

He’s super correct here.  And I will go 1 further – People actually value convenience more than almost all of these.   Especially when you use some more realistic measures of ‘what people value.’

Oh sure, you can give people little quiz cards and 20 minutes to think about thing and rank that way.  But THAT’S NOT REAL.  I’m talking about how we all act in real life.   The things we actually DO on a day-to-day basis.

It’s real easy to check a box on a form saying “Eating healthy is super important.”   Though, if you leave an go next door to the new burger-on-a-taco-on-a-donut place – Is it rrrreeeaaalllllyyy super important?   Let’s use measures based on the # of acts that people actually DO.

I heard Gary V rant on this once and it made perfect sense.   To summarize, he basically said “We all sit around saying our privacy is important and it’s bullshit.  We say that, then we post every location and approve every terms and conditions on social media.  Oh, you hate that Facebook used our data to manipulate the election, but you don’t delete the ap.   You don’t like Uber as a company, but you aren’t going to choose a tax.  People will choose the cool new thing – or especially convenience – any day.”

And this applies to higher order values like Freedom too.  On a list, people will put Freedom as “super important.?  Though, in action, freedom is almost never a primary value.   There are almost always 5 or 6 before it.

And all of those others have a cost. There is a cost to being in society.

You want Freedom?  You bitch all day bout politicians and banks and corporations and say “Freedom.  Freedom. Freedom”???   Then pull your money out of the bank, cancel your cell phone, and move to rural Alaska.    You will have shit-tons of Freedom.   Get out there far enough there won’t be any law…..or even people….. to tell you what to do.   You will be pretty fuckin free.

But, you won’t.   Because you actually value community or family more.  “Can’t move away from my family.”    Or you say “Can’t get food.”   Hunt fool.   Ok, now convenience is more important than freedom.   The list goes on and on.

You really want the world to just work the way you think it should.   Which is pretty fucking arrogant.

This is just like the “””core values””” in the places we work.   We lie about core values all the time.    If you put profit above losing money for your people – profit is your core value.  If it’s “obvious” or “dumb” the. Why not say it?

Apparently looking good.  Or noble or “good guy” is more important.   That’s your core value.
