20 Things I’ve Learned (Or Had Confirmed) About Humanity During The ‘Pandemic’ (THREAD):

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

15/ ‘The Science’ has evolved into a secular pseudo-religion for millions of people in the West. This religion has little to do with science itself.

One of the most dangerous concepts in this vein is Confirmation Bias: Confirmation Bias is the tendency to search for, interpret, focus on and remember information in a way that confirms one’s preconceptions.

According to Psychology Today, Confirmation bias occurs from the direct influence of desire on beliefs. When people would like a certain idea/concept to be true, they end up believing it to be true. They are motivated by wishful thinking. This error leads the individual to stop gathering information when the evidence gathered so far confirms the views (prejudices) one would like to be true.

For example, let’s say there are 2 predominant views on issue A:  A1 and A2.   If it’s a particularly popular (clickbait possible) or important topic there are likely to be articles or even studies done on the topic.  In this instance, for whatever reason, you hold the opinion that A2 is the correct point of view.  Could be just because of the ever scientific “because that’s what they say.”

Because it’s popular or important, there are 10 articles/ studies supporting and confirming A1 AND also A2.   Maybe A1 has a study by Princeton and A2 has one by Yale.  Both Ivy League.   Then there are a couple of studies on both side from a couple of colleges that you don’t know where they even are.  They don’t have a football team for God’s sake!    And throw in articles on some websites that sound like they were made up on the spot.

The credentials are basically the same for all of this info.   Confirmation Bias is when you believe the studies in support of A2 and give them more weight – without any neutral reason why.   It really comes down to the fact that you want to believe the data that supports what you already thing.

Damn you Cialdini and your Consistency Principle!

This becomes exponentially more dangerous when you research and learn about all the misinformation we have made major cultural health decisions on.   Could be data on concussions in the NFL.  Could be cigarettes not being deadly.   Or even exaggerating the dangers of Cholesterol because the grain counsel is funding your research – heavily funding.

When the data is corrupt, the world can get dangerous.

16/ Most people care more about looking like they are doing the right thing, rather than actually doing the right thing.

Well.   Yeah.   DOING the right thing is generally expensive, inconvenient, or just plain hard.
