It’s pretty rare that an Instagram post hits the nail right on the head at exactly the right time.   Right message, right on topic, right now.

If you do not have a consistent goal in life, you can’t live in a consistent way.

Read it again slower.   Now read it again, like this.

If you do not have a consistent goal in life, you can’t live in a consistent way.

If you think about the sentence, with a focus on the red part – it really changes the meaning.
Do you have a consistent goal FOR YOUR WHOLE DAMN LIFE?

Sure, we all have many goals we set throughout stages.   Get in shape.   Lose 10 lbs.  Get a promotion.  Make $100k this year.   There are a million of them.   But those are just temporary.

I recently went back and re-read one of my favorite books – Way of the Superior Man by David Deida.   While it’s aimed at men, the advice is universal.   The passages that stuck with me on this reading of the book was:

“Being a superior man is about giving yourself to the world.   A superior man gives his gifts and love to the world without expecting anything in return.  A superior man is always giving and letting go, giving and letting go, giving and letting go. Not expecting.”

“You must understand (1) what is MY purpose, because I need to know it for myself, (2) how does my purpose integrate to everyone else’s purpose so that we can create heaven on earth, (3) grounded in something beyond your personal – and even the collective need – that goes beyond this life.   Sourcing yourself IN the deep purpose.  Feel and Be awareness – Feel and Be Love itself.”

I don’t have a defined Life’s Mission or Life’s Purpose.   Do you?   If we don’t, how do we know that our jobs and relationships and actions are working toward our ultimate goals.  Our ultimate happiness?

So, for 2021, I set the Resolution/Intention to discover and Define my life’s purpose.   I want to discover and define what my highest mission is.  What the best way for me to give of myself to the world.  Give of myself to others.  Give of myself to the people in my life.

Until these are established, we don’t know what we are working toward.   What if I’m driving West to try to get to New York.   If you don’t know that you are trying to get to New York – you don’t KNOW if you are on the right course.

Do you know where you are going?

So this year is going to be a full year journey of self-discovery.  I’m going to set SMART Goals for the rest of my life.   Wow, huh?!   It’s going to be difficult.  It’s going to be uncomfortable.   Will it likely be the final version – no.   Though you can’t get to the final version without the first draft.

So far, my first draft of discovering this is 13,000 words.   I am currently (2.20.21) doing the Self-Authoring Program put together by the great author Jordan Peterson.    I’m 80% of the way through module 1 of 4.   It’s 13,000 words deep.   The average novel is 70k words.

So, my question is:  Do you know your life’s mission?   If you can’t define it – how do you know you are on course?  Might be worth some extra work.

Welcome to the Journey.
